What is Entombed?
Entombed: Bound by Darkness is a side-scrolling platformer for players who liked fast-paced games that challenge their skill and reflexes.
Players take control of a young woman named Zahra. After waking up from cryo-stasis at the center of a mysterious high-tech pyramid on the verge of collapse, she’ll have to make her way through a series of deadly traps and hazards, led by her robot companion, Glyph. However, all is not as it seems. Strange illusions fill the pyramid as Zahra’s mind is compromised by the sins of her past and the darkness within her heart. Before she can escape and face the outside world, she must first face herself. Entombed: Bound by Darkness is a side-scrolling platformer for players who liked fast-paced games that challenge their skill and reflexes.
Developed by Twisted Glyph.
What did I do?
I was one of the game’s two co-directors, leading a team of seven other developers. I also served as the lead level designer, lead lighting artist, lead writer, 3D modeler and texture artist. I created concept art and designed the game’s protagonist, Zahra, and her companion, Glyph, in collaboration with the team. I created a majority of the game’s environment textures using Substance Designer, I handled all of the lighting, wrote all of the dialogue, and fully designed six of the game’s nine levels.
What did I learn?
Entombed is the longest project I’ve worked on to date, taking place over roughly nine months. It was a challenging and rewarding experience full of plenty of successes and plenty more failures. As a result, it was perhaps one of the most important learning experiences of my life and it helped me grow significantly as a game designer and leader. I learned the true importance of teamwork, management, establishing and maintaining a healthy working environment, and working through creative differences. I also pushed my skills further than ever, gaining a better understanding of optimization of lighting, textures, and 3D assets.
